The history of Contagem is directly connected to the colonization period, which began in the XVII century by the time Bandeirantes (a group of explorers from São Paulo), found and started digging the rivers for gold.
The Portuguese monarchy got struck by the erroneous destination given to the precious metal, and started looking for solutions for the problems they were facing, and then they started regulating the gold exploitation, and as well building posts to collect loads of gold, slaves and cattle that entered the mines, the registers.
The origin of the name Contagem (which means, counting) given in 1716, is related to the registration of the incoming pumpkins at an inspecting office settled in the district in the surroundings of the river named "Rio das Velhas". Another decisive factor was the implementation of such "Registry" around which a small hamlet started growing boosted by commercial and farming activities during the XVIII and XIX centuries when an industrial park named Juventino Dias was established.
From then and on, the city of Contagem, located in the central area of the State of Minas Gerais, and 21 Km far from the state capital Belo Horizonte, was determinant for the industrialization process of the state.
The area was chosen because it's close to the capital, features a proper relief and good interconnection with the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, including the International Airport Tancredo Neves, in Confins, which's quite convenient for the city.
With a population of 646 thousand people, Contagem is the third in the state of Minas Gerais in terms of population and workforce, and in order to keep growing the municipality constantly invests in education and qualification of its working teams, while monitoring the performance and the needs of each group, and as well evaluates the conduct and development of them. These are the main factors that determine its competitive potential on the market, while keeping high quality customer services and support.
Contagem also keeps a sound urban service net to meet the needs of its investors, and to attract more and more investments.
Besides the enterprises that are aimed to steadfastly expand its industrial park, the City Hall of Contagem has carried out a broad urbanization program targeted to its population wellbeing such as building recreation parks and green areas in order to make the city increasingly pleasant to live.
